Emma Tooth

Artificial Flowers study

Oil on canvas, approx. 91 x 60cms. Black frame.

This confronational study grew out of the concept of women as artificual flowers and the traditional image of the reclining female form, but the artist felt she could not leave the figure like this - vulnerable and submissive - so she was armed.

The colours of this seductive piece are even more lovely in real life; the moss is in deep vibrant greens and the fur of the coat is almost touchable! A very beautiful piece.

Mr. Punch by Emma Tooth

Punch

Oil on distressed wood panel. Approx 76 x 140cms. circ. 1997

This imposing early piece by Emma Tooth from her personal collection is rendered on a heavily distressed wooden panel she is thought to have acquired during one of her midnight skip-raids in the fair city of Cambridge which were her custom in those early days - or this may be the piece which was covering a man-hole in the entrance to the morgue during building works at Addenbrookes hospital... whatever its origins, the wood's great character inspired Emma so much that she painted the piece straight out from her imagination one sunny afternoon in 1997.

The painting is far richer and more dramatic in person, it looks somewhat washed out in photographs, but you will not be disappointed with Mr. Punch!

This is an unusual opportunity for a collector to gain a piece of Emma's work from this early period as so much has been destroyed or is locked in the collections of close friends and relatives.

Be sure to click the images on the left for enlargements to really appreciate the beautiful textures in the wood and paint which make this picture so special.

Owen original portrait

Oil on canvas. Approx 98 x 104 cms. Framed

This impressively detailed portrait of Emma's then-boyfriend-now-husband, filmmaker Owen Tooth, has recently become available from the artist's collection. It is rendered in loving detail in vibrant colours which glow far more than the photograph can show. It gives the impression of being mounted on a lightbox, so luminescent (in a nice soft way!) are the colours.

A simple black frame in included free in the price as it is a little scuffed from storage. There's a small repair to the back of the canvas which is hardly visible from the front (see enlargement), hence the low price on this beautiful portrait. It is quite similar to an earlier piece by Emma which hangs in Derby's Chamber of Commerce.

An impressively large study of Emma's then-boyfriend-now-husband, filmmaker Owen Tooth, has recently become available from the artist's collection. Original Concilium Plebis costume by The Wicked Lady

We have something very unusual here for your delectation, it is the original black "Victorian Hoodie" dress made for Emma for the opening night of her show at Lazarides Gallery, London on Nov 4th 2010.

We are promoting this unique original piece on behalf of its creator The Wicked Lady and you can see more of her incredible costumes here.

It is anticipated that this piece will be sold as a work of art for display, but it is beautifully made and completely wearable. It has been worn only once by Emma Tooth herself, is clean and in perfect condition. It is approximately a UK size 8. The costume consists of a boned corset bodice and a bustled skirt. Also included is a matching drawstring purse and a stunning feathered hat based on a baseball cap shape! The bodice laces firmly up the back so waist size can be adjusted and worn looser than Emma tends to wear hers!

The concept behind the piece was to combine the modern street culture of Emma's Concilium Plebis paintings with her own personal "neo Victorian" style, thus it takes the form of a traditional Victorian bustled ball gown but is created from leisure-wear fabrics, chunky zips, actual trainers (!) and features an elegant capelet / hoodie, all in Emma's signature jet black.

This item is available to purchase now on etsy.

Love

Oil on canvas 2007 approx 100 x 80 cms

This very special and deeply personal study was inspired by perhaps Emma's all-time favourite painting; Love, by Klimt. It features a self portrait of Emma embracing her beloved husband Owen, joined by some of the other great loves of her life, her hens at the time, Linda, Harriette and Henriette (pictured left to right).

The photograph really doesn't do this one justice - it is made up of many transparent layers of deep rich colours, much more subtle and yet glowing than the photo suggests.

Self Portrait in Kimono

Oil on deep-edged heavy cotton canvas with gold paint and wax. 2005. 99 x 143cm. Unframed. Signed.

This sensual and dreamlike self-portrait has just been wrested from the artist's personal collection.

It is unusual in that Emma has used the oilpaints thinned down almost like inks in a Japanese Sumi-e painting. The orientalism is taken further in the costume and headdress Emma wears - both real items of clothing she has created - appearing somewhat mystically, like something from an Opium-dream.

This is a favourite and very personal piece of Emma's and is very popular. It also appears on the cover of a new book by Nancy Schumann called Take a Bite, exploring the untold tales of vampiresses through the ages.
